"Inspired by a True Story"
The Conjuring: Blurring the Line of Fiction and Truth for Haunting Nightmares
The Conjuring is a 2013 horror film directed by famous horror director James Waan. The movie was met with positive reviews and has stirred controversial over its claim to be "Based on the Warren Case Files" / "Based on the True Story of the Warrens."
Here's the plot from IMDb.com: "Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse." (Source) So who are Ed and Lorraine Warren? The Warrens were a famous paranormal investigator couple who dealt with numerous accounts of what they claim to be "demonic activity." Their work has been adapted numerous times, with the Conjuring being the most recent example. In addition to their adapted stories, the Warrens have written various books detailing their investigations and discussing further what "demonology" is. |

The Bottom Line
It is not certain what can be made of the Conjuring with the support given by the Warrens and the Perron family as well. There are some moments that have been embellished for dramatic effect as mentioned above, but from what we can gathered, it is as "based on a true story" as a horror movie can go. The chronological order is correct, no major characters were removed and the plot overall, remains the same.
Whether or not the Conjuring is "Based on a True Story" or "Inspired by a True Story" is now up to you.
